Go Brew Yourself!

November 25, 2009

I’ve been wanting to post this for a while — some good friends of mine started this amazing homebrewing company called Brooklyn Brew Shop. They have these fantastic kits that you can buy and then make homemade beer in yummy flavors like Gingerbread Ale and Chocolate Maple Porter. Watch them give a demo on Daily Candy, and then buy a kit! All summer they set up shop at the Brooklyn Flea, and now they’ll be selling at Brooklyn Flea’s Gifted holiday market, November 27-December 24, 20 East 4th Street, at Lafayette Street. They’re giving away samples… beer samples!

Happy Holidays!

December 31, 2007

Sorry for the lack of posts this week—I’ve been very busy eating, sitting on my bum, and watching movies. Thus, no time for blogging. But I’ll be back in ’08 with lots of fun firsts—my first meal at Momofuku, my first time at the James Beard House, and my first adventure in cooking a rack of lamb (with mustard sauce, yums!). Get ready. And HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The Gingerbread Man Alludes Me… Blast!

December 21, 2007

I desperately wanted to make these cookies for my bosses—and I was going to personalize them and write things like, “Don’t let Molly lick me” (Molly’s a dog, who I love). But I couldn’t find a Gingerbread Man cookie cutter ANYWHERE in NYC. I tried all the regular venues: supermarket, Duane Reade, Whole Foods. And then I even tried Sur La Table. But nothing! This entire city is sold-out of gingerbread men AND red sprinkles. Why?!?! I will get you next year, Gingerbread Man!

I ended up making simple, circle gingerbread and sugar cookies, and then I just used a bottle of Wilton icing (in what looks like a glue bottle) to write their names and make cute designs. They still tasted good, at least.

Yay, Pretty Plates!

December 20, 2007

So, I have the best bosses in the world. No, really. I do. I’m not just sucking up because one of them reads this blog. But they are nice, and funny, and actually care about my career and well-being… what more can you ask for? Well.. AMAZING CHRISTMAS GIFTS! They just gave me mine, and it’s these beautiful Boho dessert plates from Rosanna that I blogged about a while ago. They’re so lovely—and perfect for serving all of Jo the MasterBaker‘s creations (and occasionally a cookie or two of my own). Thank you!!!

Here’s what I did all morning at work. (Via ohdeedoh) It’s surprisingly fun and cathartic, as I imagine making a real gingerbread house would be if I had those skills. Go make one!

There are 2 insanely incredible FREE giveaways going on this week, just in time for the holidays. First, of course, over at GoodyBlog we’re have a giant Blog Party and giving away everything from kids’ toys and clothes to new Play Station systems. But, the image above is the one I really wish I could win: a box full of goodies from Williams-Sonoma. I organized this one, so I’ve seen the products first-hand and everything is so beautiful and fun. I beg you to enter since I’m not allowed 😦 There’s also a fabulous one from Gourmet Garden, where you can win their entire line of spices plus an 8-piece stainless steel cookware set. Merry Christmas to you!

Next is this awesome giveaway from YumSugar and Hostess with the Mostess. I can’t even begin to list all the amazing kitchen goods that they’re giving away b/c there are just too many, but let me just say that it’s worth more than $7,900 in prizes. Wowzer! You have to login and take a quiz to enter (which I scored 100% on, thank you very much), but it’s definitely worth it! So start entering and let me know if there are any other good holiday giveaways I’m missing!

Iron Chef Holiday Special

November 28, 2007

I have a bit of a shameful confession: I think I fell in love with Paula Deen. Normally, I find her high-pitch squeals annoying, her southern accent unbearable, and the food she makes disgusting, but she stole my heart on the All-Star Holiday Dessert Battle. I watched that entire episode thinking… man, she’s kinda funny. I even forced J to watch a little bit of it last night on DVR.

If you missed it, the show pitted Food Network stars Cat Cora and Paula Deen against Tyler Florence and Robert Irvine. And the special ingredient was SUGAR! Cora and Deen took a really whimsical approach to their dishes, putting cookies in a faux-mailbox for Santa and making a Candy Cane cocktail. Only when it comes to Christmas does this sugary-sweet approach to food really get to me, I swear! Florence sort of dropped the ball in an unsuccessful attempt at making a Buche de Noel in under 60 minutes. But, there was an amazingly awesome moment when Paula chomped down on Robert’s index finger and wouldn’t let go. When she finally did, she yelled, “Watch out! I’m a snapping turtle.” And I died of laughter. And I’m mildly ashamed at the cheesiness of it all. But YumSugar did a poll, and most people agreed that the episode was fantastic! So at least I’m not alone.

And oh yeah—Tiny Fey was a judge, so at least that increases the cool factor.
